Music video for the song Jed's Other Poem (Beautiful Ground) by indie rock group Grandaddy. Programmed entirely in BASIC on a vintage 1979 Apple computer with only 48K of RAM, a computer so old it contains no hard drive, has no mouse, and only types in majuscules. The Jed source code is available for download, making it the first open-source music video. Autumn 2005.
The song itself serves as an elegy for Jeddy-3, a recurring character on Grandaddy's record The Sophtware Slump. According to the narrative Jed is a humanoid robot built from spare parts who wrote melancholy poems addressed to no one in particular. His system eventually crashes from alcohol consumption and this other poem of his is sung in observance of his passing.
Description
Immersive visualization of human migration data for the Terre Natale ( Native Land ) exhibition at the Fondation Cartier in Paris. Visitors enter a darkened rotunda to discover a mirror-image Earth revolving around the room, printing animated maps and data to the wall's long curved surface. The video projection area is approximately 90 feet wide by 9 feet tall. Divided into five narratives, this piece quantifies both voluntary and forced movement across the globe due to political, economic, and environmental factors. Autumn 2008.
