HISTORY
This is how it all came about. In the beginning, there was the ADC. Founded in 1920, the Art Directors Club has a long history of serving as a barometer for the constant changes and developments in visual media and communications. In 1996 it created the ADC Young Guns award, signifying an active effort to identify and honor young creatives for their talent, ambition, and potential to impact the future of a multi-disciplinary industry. Initially conceived as a large-scale exhibition, ADC Young Guns 1 featured 140 of the most talented visual communications professionals under the age of 30. The selections process involved a first round of nominations by professionals in the field and by ADC affiliates, creating a pool of top-notch prospects. The exhibition curators then chose their favorites to participate. ADC Young Guns 2, held in 1998, functioned on the same basis and showed the work of 93 young artists and designers. Things stepped up a bit in 2001, when the concept evolved to reflect the strength of the award’s entries. ADC Young Guns 3 spotlighted a class of 99 fresh talents, not only in the space of a gallery but on the pages of a full-color book. In 2004, the rules themselves changed, dropping the nominations process to open up the field of competition. Entries poured in and the contest became highly selective, with the judges choosing only 41 individuals to make up the ADC Young Guns 4 class. Our most recent class, ADC Young Guns 5, consisted of 70 members and was inducted in 2006. This year we’re introducing a few more changes with ADC Young Guns 6. Having built an extraordinary community with more than a decade’s worth of talent, the competition will now rely on these past Young Guns to serve as the jury and select the members of the next class. For the first time, the total number of award recipients will be capped at 50. Honorees will have their work exhibited at the ADC gallery, published in a limited edition book by Moleskine®, and included in the ADC’s permanent collection online. They will also receive the iconic ADC Cube and complimentary one-year membership in the organization. The competition remains open only to under-30 professionals who have at least two years of work experience. ADC Young Guns 6 entries are now closed. |
